Why your toilet keeps running (and why it is worth fixing quickly)
A toilet that keeps refilling after it has already flushed is one of the most common plumbing complaints, and hard water makes it more common still.
A worn flush valve not sealing, or a fill valve not shutting off correctly.
Flush valve: over time these wear, warp, or get coated in limescale (a bigger factor here given the area's hard water) and stop sealing fully, letting a slow trickle leak into the pan continuously.
Fill valve: water keeps trickling in, usually escaping down the overflow tube, often a washer or diaphragm degraded faster by scale.
A running toilet wastes a genuinely significant amount of water on a metered bill if left unfixed.
